Appliance Energy Cost Calculator (kWh and $ per Year)
Daily and yearly kWh and the cost to run any appliance from its wattage, hours of use and your electricity rate.
Formula
kWh per day = watts × hours ÷ 1,000; kWh per year = kWh per day × days; cost = kWh × rate.
Worked example
Inputs: Appliance wattage (nameplate, or amps × volts) = 1500 W; Hours used per day = 4 h; Days used per year = 365; Your electricity rate (from your bill) = 0.15 $/kWh.
| Kwh per day | 6 |
|---|---|
| Kwh per year | 2,190 |
| Cost per year | 328.5 |
| Cost per month | 27.38 |
FAQ
Where do I find the wattage?
On the nameplate on the back or bottom of the appliance. If only amps are listed, multiply amps by the voltage (120 V for most outlets, 240 V for dryers and ranges).
Why is my real cost different?
Nameplate wattage is the maximum draw; thermostats and duty cycles (fridges, AC, heaters) mean real use is often lower. A plug-in meter gives the true number.
What rate should I use?
Divide your bill total by the kWh billed for an all-in rate; the 0.15 default is only a placeholder.
