Paver Calculator (Pavers, Base Gravel & Sand)
Number of pavers for a patio, walkway or driveway plus cubic yards of compacted base and bedding sand.
Formula
Pavers per sq ft = 144 ÷ (paver length × width); pavers = area × per sq ft × (1 + waste%). Base and sand cubic yards = area × depth(in) ÷ 324.
Worked example
Inputs: Area length = 16 ft; Area width = 12 ft; Paver length = 8 in; Paver width = 4 in; Waste allowance (more for patterns/curves) = 10 %; Base depth (per your design) = 4 in; Bedding sand depth = 1 in.
| Area sq ft | 192 |
|---|---|
| Pavers per sq ft | 4.5 |
| Pavers | 951 |
| Base cubic yards | 2.37 |
| Sand cubic yards | 0.59 |
FAQ
How many 4×8 pavers per square foot?
144 ÷ 32 = 4.5 pavers per sq ft before waste.
How deep should the base be?
It depends on traffic, soil and the paver manufacturer's installation guide; driveways need more than patios. The 4 in default is editable, not a recommendation.
Does joint width matter?
Sand joints on most pavers are narrow, so this ignores them; for wide joints, add the joint to the paver size.
