Self-Leveling Concrete Calculator (Bags of Floor Leveler)
How many bags of self-leveling underlayment or floor resurfacer to buy, from your floor area and the thinnest and thickest pour depth, using the bag's yield in cubic feet.
Formula
Average depth = (thinnest + thickest) ÷ 2. Volume = area × average depth ÷ 12. Bags = volume × (1 + allowance) ÷ yield per bag. Coverage at 1/4 in = yield ÷ (0.25 ÷ 12).
Worked example
Inputs: Floor area = 100 sq ft; Thinnest depth = 0.25 in; Thickest depth = 0.25 in; Yield per bag (from the bag or data sheet) = 0.45 cu ft; Waste and porosity allowance = 10 %.
| Average thickness in | 0.25 |
|---|---|
| Volume cu ft | 2.08 |
| Coverage per bag at quarter inch sq ft | 21.6 |
| Bags to buy | 6 |
| Bags exact | 5.09 |
Volume = area × average thickness; for a floor that slopes evenly from the thinnest to the thickest point, the average is the midpoint. QUIKRETE Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer: 0.45 cu ft per 50 lb bag (21 sq ft at 1/4 in). SikaLevel lists 21 sq ft at 1/4 in and 42 at 1/8 in. Coverage figures exclude surface profile and porosity; prime per the maker. Mixing water varies by product (SikaLevel: 1 gallon per bag).
FAQ
How much self-leveler do I need for 100 sq ft at 1/4 inch?
100 × 0.25 ÷ 12 = 2.08 cu ft. At 0.45 cu ft per 50 lb bag that is 4.6 bags, so 5 bags, or 6 with a 10% allowance.
How far does a 50 lb bag go?
About 21 sq ft at 1/4 in (QUIKRETE and SikaLevel both list 21). SikaLevel lists 42 sq ft at 1/8 in, 11 at 1/2 in and 5.3 at 1 in.
What if the floor is out of level?
Measure the thinnest and thickest pour depth. For a floor that slopes evenly, the average is halfway between; for a dip in one area, calculate that area separately.
How much for 100 sq ft at 1/8 inch?
1.04 cu ft, or 2.3 bags at 0.45 cu ft each: buy 3.
Is self-leveler the same as concrete?
No. It is a flowable cement-based underlayment poured thin. Check the bag for its minimum and maximum depth and whether it needs a primer.
