Wall Stud Calculator (Studs & Plates for a Framed Wall)
Studs at 16 or 24 in on center for a wall length, plus extras for corners and openings, and linear feet of top and bottom plate.
Formula
Studs on layout = ⌈length(in) ÷ spacing⌉ + 1; total = layout + corners × extras per corner + openings × extras per opening. Plate linear ft = length × plates.
Worked example
Inputs: Wall length = 20 ft; Stud spacing (on center) = 16; Corners in this wall = 2; Door/window openings = 1; Extra studs per corner = 2; Extra studs per opening (king/jack) = 2; Plates (bottom + double top = 3) = 3.
| Studs on layout | 16 |
|---|---|
| Studs | 22 |
| Plate linear ft | 60 |
FAQ
Is 16 or 24 inches on center right?
Both are common. Your code, wall height, loads and sheathing set the allowed spacing, so follow your plans or engineer.
Why add studs for openings?
Each door or window typically needs king and jack studs plus cripples; set the extras to match your framing detail.
